A person who knows they are intelligent may decide to 'become' atheist as a way of marking themselves out as being 'above average'(in addition to a general unease with dogma). That's not to say that we are all insecure and need confirmation of how brainy we are - It also doesn't mean that it's a false bravado, but most people invest a certain amount of ego into their public identity, whatever it is. Politicians are a classic example of nailing their colours to the mast. Religious leaders also invest ego in their particular belief, but are least likely to modify their beliefs.
